BLACK ROOF STENCILS by Jerry Schmitt

Starting with the ’32 Vicky:

  1. Cut a hole in a clamshell, slightly larger than the hole needed.

  1. Cut a hole the exact size in a piece of poster board. Tape this to the inside of the clamshell.

  1. A small piece of foam is used to hold the car against the opening, when the clamshell is closed.

  1. Here is the stencil, closed and ready to spray. (Sorry, I only had a scrap car available for these photos) This stencil has been used about a dozen times, and is still usable.

Here is a ’36 Coupe stencil made the same way.

Now, when you get paint that bleeds through, where you don’t want, the edges can be cleaned up. Spray a little WD-40 on a paper towel, and carefully rub out the edges, where needed. Try not to touch the flat black, or the oil will make it shiny. This can be done after the paint is dry, for the best results.

Next, here is my ’31 Woody mask/ stencil:

A piece of foam was cut out, slightly smaller than the roof area of the Woody. Next to it is a piece of poster board cut to the exact size & shape of an original black roof.

Rubber bands, & two golf tees hold the stencil in place during spraying.

These may not last forever, but this one has also been used about a dozen times.
